Gulf South Pipeline – “A solid Company, but Contractors beware!”

Pros

Solid reputation, and regular employees are treated well but they work very hard. Generally a professional work environment with access to top of line equipment and technology. Very knowledgeable management and supervisors, an industry leader in safety and process. Mid level management is very approachable and corporate events focus on team building and personal development. An innovative and cutting edge firm; not a 'dinosaur' - a growing corporation with a long history and excellent track record. There was an amazing networking potential there, I got a chance to meet people involved in all levels of the industry from pipeline operators to divers.

Cons

Contractors were 'abused' and given vague contract terms, no clear scope of work and generally looked down upon despite excellent work records. Very opposed to personal time - even for regular employees. Not too quick to offer any performance based appraisals. Mixed corporate cultures because of many mergers and acquisitions made it difficult to voice concerns. The prevailing attitude was "At least you have a job." Vague contracts led to contractors feeling unsecure in their positions, waiting for the next budget to come out to see if they would be employed for the next quarter. Vague job descriptions led to 'busy' work and borderline ethical violations. Very little training offered. Positions not generally filled internally - Ambition was looked down upon. Not a great amount of sharing of information between contractors looking to get hired and regular employees trying to remain in their jobs.

Advice to Senior Management

Treat contractors better if you are going to use them to perform vital jobs. Work on perfecting the 'corporate culture'.
