I have been working at H&R Block as a contractor (more than a year)

Pros

The best part of working for H&R Block is that the ability to move up is entirely up to you. They provide you with resources to learn more about your position and taxes. In addition, it's a great second/part-time job.

Cons

The biggest issue with H&R Block is that management can be a little iffy. Especially office and district managers. It's really all about you making their dreams come true. The way compensation is awarded to employees is very dog eat dog. Senior professionals are often hesitant to help a first year because it's about money and they rather complete the return. In addition, the district manager is inconsiderate of your full-time job and makes things very difficult.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more organized and more flexible for your employees. Understand that people have full time work and be more flexible to accommodate those who have an income that needs to support their family.

Good company to learn how to prepare tax returns on a commercial basis.

I have been working at H&R Block part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very good materials used in tax classes; Company offers a wide variety of classes as well, including classes that count towards continuing education requirements.

H&R Block supports employees in attaining the Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) designation, which will be required of all tax preparers by December 31, 2013.

    Flexible work schedule.

    Cons

First year salary is fixed. It was $8.50/hr in Raleigh during the 2012 season. Associates earn commissions in year two.

If you are looking to build a larger practice, you could do a lot better financially as a sole proprietor or an LLC. However, you would be responsible for overhead, marketing, and could be personally responsible in the event of malpractice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Minor suggestion: There are times where tax associates will be over aggressive in taking walk-in clients when they have scheduled appointments. The problem is two-fold: First, it denies another associate the opportunity to complete a return when they are unencumbered. Second, it can delay the scheduled appointment, which affects the service of other clients.
