I have been working at H&R Block as a contractor (more than 8 years)

Pros

It's a terrific thinking-person's part-time job for some extra money. Or can be a great job for a retired person who does not require benefits. Lots of opportunities to learn and build a client base. Local management positions can provide six months work. Some year-round work is also available.

Cons

Make sure you are working for a company-owned branch.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the corporate management decisions are made by people who have never worked in a tax office.

I worked at H&R Block as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

You learn personal tax prep process in details. Very useful for you personally, also will be very helpful in the future if you plan to work in personal tax preparation-related field. General atmosphere at a workplace is very positive, colleagues and management are always ready to help; I really enjoyed working. Work schedule allow much flexibility.

    Cons

Pay is ridiculously low even for a seasonal work. Even if you get promoted - you will probably never be able to work full year, only during a tax season. In addition you will have to take 3-months courses before next tax season, which makes impossible to work full-time at any other place during off-season time. The only reason to work there - to learn how to prepare your own tax return.
