Pros

Great Vacation Time and comp time for salaried employees
Great 401k and Pension Benefits
Somewhat Decent Pay- But Lower than public traded companies
Good Training
Great work life balance
Good Bonus Structure

Cons

Health Care Insurance Premiums are higher than my previous jobs: Kind of a oxymoron
No clear path of how you can advance your career
Consultants brought in some projects are to "green" to be managing full-time employees
Health care Insurance Reforms causes a lot changes in requirements on projects

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management looks out for their own career paths
Some the smart ambitious talent will leave if you do not implement a rotation program
Promote from within if the talent you have does not see that you believe that can perform at higher levels and spread their wings they will not and they will become comfortable collecting a check.

A horrible place to work in if you are a hardcore IT person.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Chicago, IL

I worked at HCSC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Relatively good standard benefits.
    2. Good facilities in the headquarters building. It's got 2 cafeterias, a Starbucks and a gym in the building.
    3. Actuarial and nursing areas of the company are good places to work in.
    4. If you are a contractor, this is the wonderful place for you. Depending on the team, sometimes contractors are even allowed to work from home.
    5. If you are a paper pusher such as doing release management, change management and problem management and project management, this company is a perfect place for you.

    Cons

    1. Too many layers of office bureaucracy, paperwork and red tapes to get work done in IT.
    2. Too many blame games among different IT departments when production problems arise.
    3. Too many staff in mainframe legacy systems.
    4. Too many middle management contributing minimal values to get the company move forward.
    5. Too many people getting promoted to middle management positions for the good work their staff produced.
    6. Lack of career advancement for real solid technical staff. In my previous team, some people got promoted after a team lead died, while others got promoted after being in the team for 10 years. Is it worth to waste that many years for nothing??
    7. A general lack of technical talents.
    8. Hiring too many outside consultants/contractors who are quite difficult to work with.
    9. Always rushes in code deployments to install poorly written codes. Last minute rework is always happening.
    10. Management wants staff to work off hours without always giving comp time.

Be warned. The place has been doing production code deployments every weekend since Father's Day weekend. It's not a 2-4 hour type of deal but more like 8-16 type of deal!
