Good projects but inefficient management style

I have been working at HNTB Companies

Pros

Good benefit and 401k employer matching. Good working environment. Collegues are good to work with. Competitive pay for new hires. Company is well respected in the industry and have some of the renowned projects that look good on resume.

Cons

Don't expect to have a high learning curve at a big company like that. Often they will put young engineers in a specific discipline and they are unlikely to get out of it. Engineers don't get to pick what they want to work on, projects are pretty much assigned by the management team.

They care a big deal about TOJ and people are just a number to them. The company was making good revenues but still had staff reduction because they didn't meet their goal. Office moral is at all time low because the left behind staff are unsure of their future.

Communication between upper management and staff is very weak, almost none. The performance review system is inefficient to ensure proper career advancement. Often career advancement of young engineers are neglected.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should continuously follow up with staff's performance review rather than just once a year. Take a good look of who's working on what. Reward the ones who work really hard and cut the ones who are just hanging out. Stop abusing young engineers and should treat them with more respect.

Incredibly Poor Management and Shortsighted Growth Aspirations

I have been working at HNTB Companies

    Pros

The company has some good projects in its portfolio from its past and the pay is comparable to similar firms in the region.

    Cons

Management style is top-down. Team-building, camaradrie, and communication between managers and employees is non-existent at best. Morale is poor, and frequent mass lay-offs have not come with any reassurances to the employees that are left behind. Review the benefits package carefully before taking this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time understanding who is actually doing the work, and reward employees for their hard work, not just the middle management that conveys the work to you.
Understand that "4 for 4" is not a differentiator. Every company promises quality work, on time, on budget to the clients satisfaction every time! "You are the Spark" is seriously not good enough to motivate me.
Stop surroundings yourselves with obsequious "yes-men". There is a reason the company is struggling to get new work.

    I worked at HNTB Companies

    Pros

They are big (so decent benefits) and mostly well respected.

    Cons

Very limited internet access (no gmail, no media sharing) as a companywide policy makes it hard to stay cutting edge or produce neat work. Office environment windowless and uninspired, company is very square and quite conservative, stingy with overhead time and overtime pay, and will always give you a hard time if you would like to seek some prefessional development (don't even think that they would pay for it) and management is not very understanding or interestered in providing feedback or mentorship to younger employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop your staff so they feel like they might advance here, rather spin thier wheels until they can leave and go somewhere else. Also, your training for mentors and supervisors is terrible, as is your review process and overhead time policies.
