I have been working at HackerAgency full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

- Surrounded by talented and savvy people
- Great benefits
- Strong leadership
- Fun perks

An incredibly fast paced environment that allows you to be creative, no matter what department you work in. We have a strong Executive Team who are generous with sharing their knowledge and value open transparent communication. They encourage “empowerment” , but it’s still up to the individual to take it and run with it. Those that don’t, complain they aren’t empowered. Those that do, make things happen and are successful here.

When you join Hacker Group you are made aware that you are paid a base salary and then receive quarterly bonuses which are based on profit. We have had some quarters where the bonus was low and that can affect company morale. But we have historically had strong quarters where the bonuses are very good, and even some that rock!!

Bottom-line this is a great environment to work in, to learn, to master skills, grow professionally, and even have fun while doing it.

Cons

Cons: Sometimes long hours, and quick turn-around times. Everyone works hard here, and if you also work smart, you can have a decent work-life balance, but as in all things you need to put some effort into it.

    Pros

Hacker Group definitely rewards those that take some ownership and accountability in their work. You need to challenge the status quo, stick to your guns, and do things your own way. There's a slight trace of "old guard' here, but when challenged with respect, is met with respect.

    Cons

Occasionally long hours and politics. Predominantly runs as a meritocracy, but sometimes can feel slightly caste-limited.

I worked at HackerAgency full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The people on the front line are great. The PM's, developers, creatives etc. are good, talented people who are great to work with in spite of the "throw someone under the bus" culture that upper management cultivates. The pay is great (because it has to be), but their weird pay scheme seems unethical; after three quarters they hold back half your pay, then pay that plus a bonus quarterly. It means you can make a lot of money, but you have to live on half a salary for three months while they reap the interest.

    Cons

After reading the previous reviews, I could almost just copy and paste the comments about the culture of fear, finger pointing and over reaction to every perceived infraction. It's the kind of place that tries to make you feel like you're lucky to be there (they do mostly print, and junk mail to retirees at that, so not sure where the attitude comes from) and that you are one mistake from being reprimanded, written up or let go. It is very process intensive, but don't expect to be given time to get up to speed, you are to hit the ground running or there's a price to pay. And they won't speak to you directly, it's more likely that they'll go straight to your manager or even their manager to complain. Good luck dodging the inevitable landmines. A sense of paranoia creeps in rather quickly as you start to second guess everything you do. It's a great place to dispose of any excess self esteem you might have.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Again, mirroring the other reviews, it's very simple; be civil, decent and kind. Reward, don't just punish. The culture of the dreaded "error meeting", trashing people in meetings, gossip and escalation is very toxic. You may think that making tons of money justifies the behavior, but your reputation in the industry is terrible, and your ability to hire and keep good people is hindered by it. Other companies manage to be successful while making the happiness of their employees a priority. Look at the long term benefit of investing in people and managing to their strengths. Stop seeing them as cogs in the machine who should be disposed of once you see them as broken. You have some fantastic, driven people working for you, they shouldn't be spending time in the bathroom crying. Yes, that happens.
