Relaxed, friendly environment, autonomy for groups and managers is nice but also makes everything slower.

I have been working at Hamline University as a contractor

    Pros

The atmosphere of Hamline is friendly and relaxed but the people still really take their jobs seriously and want to improve the university. There is a fair amount of autonomy for some groups and managers (especially Faculty) which can be a good thing as it gives people the freedom to try new things.

    Cons

Hamline is having trouble financially and there is a growing divide between faculty and the administrative leadership with staff stuck in the middle. In some cases the amount of autonomy given to some groups and managers means that large department spanning projects take longer and require more work to coordinate the different groups.

Hamline does not give enough weight to technology. Even before the financial troubles IT was consistently underfunded. This is beginning to show as other similar schools (Mac, St Thomas, etc) are beginning to outpace Hamline technologically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't take bonuses when laying off staff. Even if that is just a rumor don't even let the rumor spread. It really hurts morale. If you are the leader and your organization is suffering you had better be the first to help bear it (ie. salary cuts)

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
