I have been working at Harley-Davidson full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Really cool products! Good group of people to work with Premium Healthcare On-site fitness centers, staffed with trainers Opportunities to interact with customers firsthand at rallies and sponsored events Lots of new technology and processes Solid compensation and perks Good sense of direction for the company with defined mission and stretch goals

Cons

Very much a relationship based company Non-confrontational, people would rather go to a manager then address a concern or issue firsthand Lack of accountability with cross-functional teams Poor HR department, not engaged with nor understand what employee development means The worst change management and change leadership ever experienced Organizational structure does not meet the needs of the business Ambiguity around core business hours, expect to respond to emails and phone calls 7 days a week

Advice to Management

There is a difference between Change Management and Change Leadership, and a proper way to implement both Hold people accountable and empower others to do the same It's only motorcycles, not curing world hunger

    Pros

    - Good fitness centers (although little time to use them), free parking. - Great brand (it's what keep people there and management being able to tell staff "you should be lucky to work here.") - Good benefits (although they decline a little each year) - Casual work environment and dress code.

    Cons

    - Leadership "talks" about values, caring about people, and doing what's right for the customer, but - Big corporate profits and big egos. From marketing to engineering and certainly down to the manufacturing and supplier level. Little respect or care for the individual. - Lots and lots of corporate politics, and you better smile through 24/7 work days. - Lack of accountability within cross-functional teams. - Poor HR department, not engaged with nor understand what employee development means. When Operational and Development Teams tried to address in the past, C-level leadership didn't want to hear it, and Director-level just bows down and tosses their staff under the bus in order to stay ahead. - Horrible change management and change leadership. If something goes wrong, they just fire those closest to it. People DO NOT matter. - Organizational structure does not meet the needs of the business - understaffed and angry teams. - General culture is still old-school. If you're not a white male, you best stay in the shadows and learn that "we want to hear your voice" really means "tell leadership what they want to hear." The past three years of "anonymous employee surveys" where Director-level and above bonus compensation requires improved employee satisfaction, has accounted in a suspicious number of people being let go.

    Advice to Management

    - This isn't Detroit. - People should matter more than your egos or bonus plans. - Take time to walk your talk and hold yourselves accountable. - Learn how to effectively communicate.

    I worked at Harley-Davidson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Casual environment, lots of work on new and different things. Good people to work with. The company is working to upgrade to new tools and procedures.

    Cons

The company is outsourcing IT jobs to and off shore company based in India during a period of "restructuring" of the IT department. Effective at the end of the year they outsourced the support personal. People who handled the day to day functions and support of those functions. People wonder if all of IT may eventually be outsourced.

    Advice to Management

Understand what employees really do on a day to day basis and not just what there title is before thinking they are not needed.
