I have been working at Harvard University full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

As an RA at HBS I worked with incredible faculty as well as leaders in organizations around the world. I traveled to various countries to conduct field research and wrote HBS case studies as well as a book with my professor. The hours were really great and the travel was amazing.

Cons

My experience was unusual - most RA's never or rarely travel. It's also so dependent on which faculty member you are working with.

I worked at Harvard University as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Looks great on your resume! People very nice...initially.

    Cons

Management disorganized. Data silos. Customers inaccessible. Little direction, if any, from lower level management. Very long time frames for any decision, including project timelines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out how to eliminate the politics, especially among the IT staff. It's not a contest...it's a team. I've worked in multiple Harvard schools/departments, and have the same advice for each.
