I have been working at Hayward USD

Pros

The teachers at this school, with few exceptions, are excellent and really care about what they do. They are the only reason I have stayed for the whole year.

Cons

Tough population to work with
admin is inconsistent with discipline
as with all teaching jobs right now, it is extremely difficult to get full time work if you are new

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Back up the teachers when discipline is needed. Do not threaten a consequence and not follow through - you should know this.

    I have been working at Hayward USD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Higher pay than comparable school districts. New leadership is restoring trust and relationship. Seems to be more proactive than many school districts in preparation for the transition to Common Core. There is more attention being given to culturally responsive instruction EL students and African American students than has happened in over a decade.

    Cons

    Disfunction school board. Antagonistic culture at times, particularly between admin and the union. Long history of weak trust between admin and teachers. No health benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Understand that the relationship and trust that you are building well is still fragile. One of the biggest issues for maintaining that relationship and trust is longevity of administrators. The high turnover of administrators in HUSD has contributed heavily to the cynicism and skepticism of teachers and staff.
