Pros

Great benefits. Can be a secure place to be for many years, if you land in a good department with good leadership.

Cons

If you can function in a bloated bureaucracy where often times the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing, maybe you can survive here. But say good-bye to your personal life; if you have a strong work ethic and strive to achieve, you will easily put in 60+ hours a week, especially if you're a Grade 16 or higher. Expect to be glued to your laptop and Blackberry night and day. Many departments push their people to the extreme without regard for employee well-being.

Advice to Senior Management

HCSC could be on the !00 Best Places to Work List if: 1) the technology infrastructure was brought completely into the 21st century; 2) Management is comprised of people who are qualified and deserve their positions based on ability and competence; not just because someone has been at HCSC since high school and kept getting promotions based on tenure; 3) Employees need to feel free to speak up if their workload is too extreme, without fear of retaliation. The Workforce Engagement process is not a safe haven for everyone with a concern.
