Very fulfilling to work with and help children, families, but disappointed by the "higher ups" who work in the office.

Pros

The kids! Period! You must love children and not be judgemental or impatient. But if you love kids, and want the best for them, it's a good job. They do have benefits, and good working hours. Your schedule matches public school systems.

Cons

Poor management in Central office in Morristown. They are out of touch with the realities of the day to day challenges the staff in centers face. And they do not seem to care. There is also alot of red tape and regulation that sometimes do not make sense but this comes with the fact that it is a state funded job. Also, sometimes you see people who should not qualify for the program be admitted anyways, and there is not much you can do about it. I saw a very high income person who put a child in to get free daycare. They lived in a large expensive custom home and drove expensive cars, but because they were not married, the mom qualified. Marriage shoud be taken out of the equation of deciding who needs help! Seeing abuses like this make it hard but if you just focus on the kids, you will love working with them.

    Pros

Progressive, research based practices, Federal program which means large support network and similar programs to rely on for issues, oldest standing war on poverty program in the country, successful in its mission for children and families, important in the community.

    Cons

Limited funding - which means no salary increases, minimal funds for staff education or training, very heavy on paperwork and policies, strict guidelines from Federal government so little room for experimentation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the inspiration alive - everyone is at Head Start for one reason: because they believe in it. Staff need to be reminded why they are making the concessions they are to stay with the program and be committed to doing their job well. Obviously pay increases also, but that is not necessarily driven by management alone.
