I have been working at Heald College full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Making a difference in the lives of students who really want to grow
Teaching is a rewarding, engaging activity
Many colleagues are committed to students and to each other

    Cons

    Irregular and difficult work schedule
    Increasing work without increasing pay
Layoffs/downsizing result in insecure job outlook
"Customer"-oriented educational model - goal of company is to keep butts in the seats, not actually educate
"You should be glad you have a job" messages from management
Parent company is losing money from other divisions, wants Heald to make up the difference

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your mission (to teach skills to last a lifetime) actually what you shoot for
Treat staff like resources, not like a drag on profits

    Current Contractor - Adjunct Faculty
    Current Contractor - Adjunct Faculty

I have been working at Heald College as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly staff, commitment to student centered ideals, long company history.

    Cons

Low pay for so much work. Adjuncts were once paid per course contract and hourly for all non-contact hours such as recommended meetings, orientations, tutoring. Now these once recommended duties are required duties of the contracted per course salary rate which remains the same. Essentially we are given much more work for the same amount of pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to paying adjuncts hourly for additional duties beyond contact hours. Institute basic literacy and social skills as a requirement for admission, as some students are not academically prepared or mentally capable for the developmental level prerequisite courses. Rethink the culture that sees calling absent students as helpful to their professional development and instead hold them accountable and prepare them for the real world. No company would actually do this if an employee failed to show up to work.
