I have been working at Health Market Science

Pros

Good home/ work life balance. Above industry average pay. Technologically speaking, there are some very good and interesting projects to work on.

Cons

An extremely uncomfortable work atmosphere. It seems as if everyone here is working in fear. Very low employee morale. (The only people who tried to change this are now gone.) Constant re-orgs, constant priority changes, and constant method/work techniques changes make this a maddening, non-fulfilling career choice. There is absolutely no support of middle management, and I don’t think upper management really has a clue what is going on, they have a revolving door of talent and only the good people seem to leave. I’m not sure how HMS continues to survive, I won’t be surprised to show up one day and the doors will be chained because they went out of business. A very unimpressive, draining place to work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the constant change, stick with something for more than a month. Find out why these talented people are leaving in droves and try to keep them. Take a good look at your mid-level managers.

I worked at Health Market Science

    Pros

At one time HMS was an excellent place to work. The culture was smart, pleasant, and team oriented. The staff was universally brilliant and cohesive. Collaborative learning was highly valued and communication was organic.

Management Appreciated this and those that made it work.

    Cons

Since sold in 2008, the current(largely new) management decided that it was time to abort the start up culture, and become a Big Business. They succeeded in murdering the culture and installing a hostile, volatile environment while muddling progress in applications and worker growth.

Outsourcing efforts have continued to be costly failures, both financially and in terms of the resulting attrition of talent.

Benefits have dwindled, 401k matching is 'best effort' only. Healthcare is focused on cost, not 'ability to maintain life'.

Upper management seems to view HMS as a government contract with unending funding and no requirements to produce, a cache of money to be drawn personally. What little is produced is produced without any attention to honesty or legality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Begin to appreciate the work involved with the product. Meter cost-to-deliver and filter sales contracts for viability.

Value employee input rather than discourage opposing views, actually, just plain valuing employees would be a good start.

Break up the senior management clique, and objectively value people at the top - then make adjustments accordingly.

    Quit lying to the board.

I have been working at Health Market Science full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Heavy focus on open source tools (Cassandra, Hadoop, Angular JS, Ruby, MySQL, OpenOffice...) which is a great way to become technically proficient and flexible in the IT workforce. Some training opportunities exist to get a boost coming up to speed with these tools.

Company has a flexible telecommuting policy. Some folks work from home one or two days a week. Summer hours provide for an early end of day on Friday. Most important things are getting the work done and honoring time commitments

Benefits package is okay. It covers the essentials - 401k, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, tuition assistance, bonus plan.

    Cons

Some groups are more social than others. Hard to get to know people if they don't work in your group.

Such be more training for all levels - analysts, managers. This would help people grow in the company better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember to reward top performers. Promote the company more.
