I have been working at Healthwise

    Pros

Healthwise has a great mission (to help people make better health decisions). It tries very hard to follow through on its corporate culture of respect, teamwork, and doing the right thing. It doesn't always succeed, but the fact that it cares about such things (as well as conducting 2 employee satisfaction surveys per year) puts it ahead of most other companies. The benefits are good, although unusual: Healthwise provides a high-deductible medical and pharmacy benefits plan but contributes to each employee's account annually to help them meet the deductible. While at times overly earnest and a bit too particpatory when it comes to decision making, the upside of that is that most of the business is pretty transparent. The company was named one of 10 best small workplaces by the Wall Street Journal in 2007.

    Cons

Possibly the biggest missteps come in the way of employee managment and human resources. Or it may just seem that way because of the high standards the company sets for itself (respect, teamwork, and do the right thing). When it stumbles, it stumbles hard. The company has grown more than 30% for each of the past 3 years, and it is having a difficult time hanging onto its culture. Even still, it's a small company, with just over 200 employees. Some of the company policies reflect a Ma & Pa mentality that can be kind of maddening to anyone who has worked for a larger or more corporate organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the employee surveys, and pay attention to what they say and the trends they indicate. The fact that you continue to do these surveys and try to act on them is noted and appreciated by employees.

I worked at Healthwise full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can bring your dog to work, thats about it...

    Cons

I've known several people to work there for years and never receive a raise or opportunity for promotion. They are known to use people and fire or layoff without much cause. The "culture of respect" is anything but.
