Great senior management, lacking talent in the middle.

I have been working at Hearst Corporation

Pros

Solid company with a long history, and the culture is set up to respect the individual workers

Cons

While the top-level senior management is great with their vision, communication and support, the upper middle management (VP-level) all seem too focused on protecting their turf than to be good leaders.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realign to remove the redundancies across magazines. Remove the digital team as a separate unit and have the sales & biz dev teams work under the magazine titles and/or the integrated group.

    I worked at Hearst Corporation

    Pros

The gym, the cafeteria, and the general building

    Cons

Depending on where you work, the hours can really consume you. In these trying economic times, some departments are bitterly understaffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make business decisions so quickly.

I have been working at Hearst Corporation

    Pros

Hearst has an excellent benefit package and good, solid guidelines to protect employees from harassment, ect., in the work place. Hearst also has a good reputation as a news leader.

    Cons

Salaries are not fair for all employees, they are chosen on a person-to-person basis and are extremely low in comparison to other newspapers in the area I work. A journalist at a local weekly tabloid makes more than I do as a lower level editor at the largest daily paper in the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management in Beaumont is very effective and professional, our editor is firm but fair and does his job well.
