Current Employee - Sales Assistant in New York, NY

Pros

The building is unbelievable. The management is generally fair. There are many different areas that one can pursue. This can mean different magazines, newspapers, TV stations, etc. Also one can work on the editorial staff, sales staff, marketing staff, etc. So there are a lot of different avenues or employees.

Cons

The entry level salaries are not that competitive. You would usually have to work in NYC which can be expensive. Your experience is totally dependent on the media outlet you work for.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I dont really know.

    Pros

If you tow the party line, you're fine. If you attempt to have any free-thinking ideas, you will be out the door.

    Cons

Highly political environment. They could care less what you know as long as you do what you are told and on time. Even then there is always risk they will lay you off because they are reckless when it comes to that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The board needs to dump certain individuals who make the whole company toxic. Also, stop making horrible investments and acquisitions. This is an iconic American company that is quickly circling the drain.

Good luck, old pals, as the Chronicle continues to struggle

Former Employee - Staff Writer  in  San Francisco, CA
Former Employee - Staff Writer in San Francisco, CA

    Pros

Great bunch of colleagues, and it's the only game in town for people who want to work at a big paper in a great city. You can't beat the feeling of writing for a large daily paper like the Chronicle. There are tremendously talented people, you are still widely read in the region (online and off), and you get to go places and do things not available to the average person. When you get it right, and publish a great story, there's no better feeling in the world.

    Cons

The paper has no business model and feels like a sinking ship. Tremendous insecurity. Low morale. Sadly, no one can figure out how to turn it around, and so management and the union blame each other. With a shrinking staff, fewer people are doing more work, and no one knows what to give up and what to give emphasis to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace change. Listen to the employees.
