Hard to get fairly recognized unless you're included the gossiping "in" crowd, like going to High School all over again.

Current Employee - Senior Portfolio Accountant in Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Senior Portfolio Accountant in Chicago, IL

Pros

Among Industry leaders, company has depth of talented individuals to utilize, good firm infrastructure, good exposure to real estate industry, office is in a great location

Cons

Positions within my department are very heterogeneous. The department has many different funds which leads to a lot of variation as far as work load expectations, responsibilities given, who you interact with, etc. which leads to a lot of unfairness with promotions and compensation. The bonus structure should be improved to more justly reward hard working employees instead of company performance vs. benchmarks that are totally out of most employee’s control. No salary increases given at year end 2008 into 2009 or into 2010 and very small increases (avg around 1%) for 2011.

Advice to Management

Fix the bonus structure so people in Accounting are given just compensation for their hard work and not based on factors out of their control. Address the varying work demands within the different funds in the investor accounting department. Start giving realistic salary increases that at least match increases in cost of living.

    Pros

Great benefits, wonderful atmosphere, management keep to themselves, feed you all day long, parties galore, informational meetings, great compensation.

    Cons

High turn-over for account executives, administrative assistants are relegated to boring, non-thinking, redundant tasks, pay is not great - neither are expectations. Goals are given, but not supported. You can not be dynamic, multi-task person with great skills in this firm - it is not needed or necessary. You are basically a body doing small tasks. Also, upper management does not practice their own mission statement of respect, honesty, and ethics - this only applies to their clients. You can yell and verbally be abused by senior management.
