    Pros

Good safety culture, adequate pay and benefits, merit-based promotions come mainly from the field.

    Cons

Only the "in crowd" gets anywhere here. That means being white, male, Christian, straight and with the company 10 years or more. If you've worked your way into management from the field, you have a job for the rest of your life.

    Advice to Management

Hire some female and minority executives, since there are none to promote from within. Diversity is actually profitable. View the college-educated Superintendent or PM as a benefit rather than a threat. Encourage independent though - blind obedience is not an asset.
