I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

You get to work with some good people on sometimes interesting work and, certainly in my bit of the organisation, I don't have a manager breathing down my neck - there's some flexibility in how you work.

It's a big corporate and so there are opportunities to work in different bits of the business and in different geographies.

    Cons

There are many things wrong with HP at many levels. It's a big, US-based corporate that's hugely centralised. Local, country-based management, even those calling themselves 'senior leaders' have very little power to change anything so in effect they are managers (doing corporate's bidding) and not really leaders. There is a huge disconnect between the real US-based leadership and the real world.

HP is into 'employee engagement' but cannot define what it is, but they think how to improve it is to provide incessant webcasts at every level of management every quarter. It isn't.

Benefits have been eroded over the years - from offering a good benefits package it's now just about OK.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ladies and gentlemen, get out of your West Coast offices, travel (not just to the US) and physically meet real employees. Ask them what they are thinking and feeling and how YOU can make it better for them.

Invest properly in your people. Allow them to attend proper, classroom-based training not just web-based training. Allow your people to attend conferences without complaining about the cost - you will easily recoup the cost in goodwill. Also, continue to reward your people; 2011 was a reasonable start but it needs to be just that, a start.
