A big company trying to restructure itself: a few exciting opportunities rising amidst heavy politics and processes.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Fairly stable environment (safe the occasional massive 30k layoffs)
    Good health benefits
Possibility to stand out through quality work, and take ownership of projects.

    Cons

Very process oriented - too many cases of processes taking precedence over common sense.

This creates a fertile ground for office politics - much more than usual based on my experience.

No kitchen/office perks - absolutely nothing - water and coffee are the only guaranteed goodies you can expect, safe the occasional fruit basket and biz lunch left overs. Probably qualifies as the worst place ever when it comes to perks - almost comically tragique when compared to any other company of the bay area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forget the processes and politics for a moment, pay attention to insider suggestions and innovations.
    Get real about kitchen perks.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The company's current struggles - and turnover - have brought an infusion of new blood and new thinking. Got a great idea? This is the best time to work for HP as it is no longer focused on protecting successful franchises like printing and personal computing, but on breakthrough ideas and new opportunities.

    Cons

This is not your father's HP. The change to the HP culture wrought by the Fiorina and Hurd regimes is irreversible. There are artifacts of the "old religion" like "open door policy", but the rewards system has shifted to one that encourages individual achievement - often at the expense of collaboration, and discourages risk-taking, and this is an inhibitor of the innovation that the company claims to seek.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You've been dealt a terrible hand, and are playing it as best you can. Good luck!
