Former Employee - Design Engineer  in  San Diego, CA
Former Employee - Design Engineer in San Diego, CA

Pros

Offers a wide variety of challenging work with good historial commercial success. Broad set of skills needed and interaction with a lot of very good people. Exposure to many facets of engineering.

Cons

HP has gotten big, and decisions seem to take a long time. Priorities have been changing often. That has led to instability in the programs. Also seems like everything is urgent so it's hard to keep to a good, solid plan.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people of hp are your greatest asset. Keeping up the morale and innovation should be your #1 goal. Also, there seems to be a lot of chasing new ideas which has taken management attention away from doing the fundamental job well. Get back to the basics of good, solid engineering work.

    5. New Board of Directors.
    6. Print-your-own 25 year service certificate. Insert your name first.

    Cons

    1. Flextime - opportunity to work 24x7
    2. Lots of brilliant minds squandered
    3. Advancement and recognition minimal after 10 years.
    4. The Mark Hurd empire left an internal mess behind. You've heard it before.

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Corvallis, OR

    Pros

Plenty of opportunity. Despite economic and competitive headwinds, company has momentum, and new leadership. Hope for better, in an improving world-wide economy, new leadership.

    Cons

Last 12 years of 17 with company, plenty of dysfunctional and misguided management and strategies. It's been tough, but chose to pass on early retirement in favor of getting back to the HP Way. Hope my bet pays off!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to the roots of the company, one that engineers worldwide admire: Shuck commodity products that only generate slim profit through cost reductions. Get back to niche engineering, where innovation creates new, lucrative, unexploited markets.
