I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Good Brand (but eroding). Talented engineers on some teams.

Flexible work hours. Work-life balance. Many learning opportunities for self starters.

You can do well if you end up on a good team or have a good direct-report manager.

Company somehow managed to stay profitable despite being in turmoil for well over a decade.

Cons

Low salaries, and low morale. Hard to get promoted in technical ladder. Main options are to become a manager. Some cronyism exists and only close friends of managers gets promoted. Attrition is a serious problem.

Lack of any real technical mentoring program. You must learn on your own. Clueless engineers remain clueless and slow the team down.

Some product development focused on how to rip off customers (that are vendor locked) instead of building a good quality product.

Bogged down by mandated processes or tools that are poor or bad fit for the job. Sr. Management and Mid-level management mostly clueless and are there to pillage the company. There are too many managers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a flatter organization. Cut out 2-3 levels of middle management. Replace with engineers. Stop acquiring companies and innovate from within. Also promote CEOs from within that actually understand the company.

    Pros

Can't stress enough how good the work/life balance is! Every manager I've had in 16 years has been a great manager with their own unique strengths. Very relaxed environment. In my personal experience HP has been very committed to my development/growth.

    Cons

Years of "benchmarking" strategy by upper management have been very succesfull. HP is now average in many respects instead of being an industry leader, albeit with a few bright exceptions. Could be even tougher times ahead for surviving employees (more layoffs and compensation cuts) as old core businesses are rendered increasingly irrelevant in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead don't follow. Invest heavily in early stage development of potentially disruptive technology. Quit putting stockholders first. (i.e. Carly & Hurd days) Leo was an insignificant flash in the pan and the jury is still out on Meg.
