Pros

Great bunch of people to work with.

Cons

HP is moving Tulsa jobs off shore to Costa Rica, as they move forward with this those of us still working for HP in Tulsa are treated like just some one to fill a chair, and they create arbitary numbers to work with. As an example most people calling in have no idea how a computer really works so it takes about 4 min to get the information from the caller to find out what the problem is and they have no idea how to tell us what the computer name is or what the asset tag number is,if they can find it, it takes them about 5 min to find the information, then it takes 6 to 8 min to remote into a computer to find out what the problem really is. We are told my management we need to have the call finished and the costumer satisfied in 8 min. There is no reasonable way to hit that number, it shows management is setting unrealistic goals so at review they can lay people off. And that is exactly what is happening. Then when those people leave they are bringing people in that are being paid just over minimum wage and now about as much about computers as a the people we are helping, and they are being churned out of training only to quit in 6 months and be replaced with someone just like them. Add to that when the roads are undrivable do to ice on the streets management will flat out tell you to come to work or you will not get a raise if you are due one the next employee evaluation for taking a day off with out scheduling it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit blaming the employees for not make goals when you know they are not achievable.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Large, diversified company with broad geographic reach.
Salary direct deposit still taking place twice a month.
New hope for turnaround due to the appointment of Meg Whitman as CEO.

    Cons

Strategy du jour from upper management based on CEO or executives current hot buttons or highlighted business issues. One day it is innovation, the next cost savings, the next revenue growth, etc.
No salary growth for past 5-8 years. Zero.
Benefits are industry standard - used to be market leading in the 'old days'.
Constant cut-backs and layoffs. Been told to do more with less many times over. Lots of talk about cutting out non-productive work and focusing on fewer things. Never happens though.
Those left are hanging on in wait of an improving external job market.
Ranking / rating system in dire need of a major overhaul. Can exceed your goals substantially but still be rated average or below. Profess to desire team approach, but rewards based on individuals outperformaing their team members leading to politics, infighting and catching the attention of management.
Managers don't manage people, they perform the same jobs as individual contributors, but happen to have people reporting to them.
    No raises when promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to understand the turmoil and distrust that has been bred over the past decade. It cannot be turned around overnight, but if steps in the right direction are taken, it will go a long way toward moving in a positive direction. Focus on employee needs and feeding the innovation pipeline. Every thing else should be secondary. Quit hiring new Senior VPs externally. Have had several new executive hires after stating that we would promote from within (for a change). All this while getting rid of 27,000 employees through early retirement and layoffs. Shameful.

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Ability to work from home, flexibility, smart and collaborative colleagues

    Cons

Constant reorganizations and shuffling CEO's and management have left company without direction. Employees are expected to more and more with less and less. As people are laid off and not replaced the remaining employees have to take up the excess work. Raises are nonexistent, benefits keep getting cut, promises of bonuses are broken and the pre Compaq merger culture of respect for employees and customers is a distant memory. Don't count on being able to work remotely in the future. Meg, the CEO, has said, in an all employee meeting, that employees should be in the office and co-located with their teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop already! No more mergers and acquisitions. The size of the company has swelled to 325,000 in the last 10 years. It was not rampant hiring by HP managers, as you have implied, it is through mergers with Compaq, EDS, Autonomy, Mercury, etc. Put the employees and customers first and do what is right for them and the company will thrive again.
