I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

Pros

The people at HP are creative, brilliant, honest and focused on delivering the best customer experience. Managers are well prepared to lead and manage 'people' versus headcount. Performance evaluations are useful and there's never a surprise at the end of the year. Managers gice prompt feedback and use the very few reward tools in their power to recognize excellent performance.

Cons

Even top performers have not seen more than standard of living raises in many years (4+ years). It's not unusual to have 4 different managers in under 16 months. HP reorganizes at least twice a year. HP people are getting a bit worn down by the layoffs.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Examine the compensation strategy for your Top Performers. Can you really keep them working for you with the current comp strategy?

    Pros

Big Company , Good Name, depending on the team you are on, good opportunities to work world wide. Lots of access to cutting edge in technology and smart IT people. Lots of diversity within the company.

    Cons

Salary, Salary, Promotions very tough, raises are horrible. If you are not Management you better have a high salary. Not much room for upward growth. Very bureaucratic. You work alot with overseas workers and communication issues make getting projects complete a very difficult process. Especially if you are trying to develop something.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

.Promote more from within, Give more chances to lower level employees. Challenge your workers don't settle for average. Make HR better like it was when you were Compaq. Help your employees grow.

Hewlett Packard -- Turnover is increasing. HP today is no better that any other high tech company

    Pros

The stability of a large company is both a positive and a negative. The churn that is currently in place is sucking the lifeblood out of the printer division, to fund the IT and PC business organizations. Mr. Hurd is in control and that is his choice.

    Cons

HP is now no different than any other high tech company. The turnover will increase as a result
The stability of a large company is both a positive and a negative. For those that prefer to sit and watch the grass grow, it's easy to do. For those that want to innovate, unless you're born, raised, educated and living in China, there is little or no future. Complete business's have been moved to China -- not just manufacturing, everything, engineering, marketing, customer sat, quality, procurement, etc. The result was that the lab that created the product category was once 156 employees, now it is 30 and those that remain are doing busy work, probably until they can be placed into work force reduction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Wake UP !!!
Business teams should make business decisions, not act like everything is an engineering technical review.
