    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

HP's broad portfolio provides excellent exposure to and experience with the full spectrum of IT. As a Tier 1 vendor, HP almost always gets a "seat at the table" with clients when there is a major IT purchasing decision.

On a personal level, I made many lifelong friends during my tenure w/this firm.

    Cons

All of the executive management and Board-of-Director fiasco's over the past 5+ years, combined with multiple acquisitions have made the company highly dysfunctional. It was extremely painful to experience the company move from "growth" to "realign" to "turn-around crisis" in under 36 months.

If you are considering joining this firm now, you need to have a strong constitution because you will experience continued turmoil and transition for at least the next 12-24 months. You will work very hard covering for talent shortages as more senior people continue to exit. And, depending on your role, being "new" will carry risk. There is an extremely high probability of more waves of layoffs as the ELT's tries to get the company off life support and back on some stable ground.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

DIVEST! Take the company back to the defendable core as quickly as possible before your best engineering talent leaves. Without some of the "rock stars" in product development (and you know who they are!), HP will be relegated to the history books in short order.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

HP has been a great place to work at for many years, good people, market leader in printing, and sometimes great and challenging projects.

    Cons

While the theory was to hire cheap engineering off-shore to do the mundane, run-of-the-mill tasks for each release while the engineering in the states was then free to innovate -- I don't think it has worked that way in practice. It seems the off-shore people would rather innovate. Meanwhile market share is shrinking, wages stagnate while CEO's come and go with huge salaries and golden parachutes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The new CEO, seems to be making the right noises, but is it just talk?
