Pros

HP has outstanding talent, some of the best engineers I have ever worked with. The culture, although not as great as in its glory years, is still among the best there is. HP really supports work-life balance and strives to be supportive of its employees. I've been able to work on many different technologies. HP has allowed me to grow and learn and that is one of its greatest strengths.

Cons

HP is becoming more and more average as time goes on. Doesn't pay as well as it should anymore. Not enough focus on high quality products as in the past. In the last 10 years there has been too much emphasis on purchasing companies rather than developing internally.

Advice to Management

Invest in home-grown R&D rather than attempting to buy companies to provide technology.

    Pros

Extremely flexible working hours. A large percentage of the IT staff is allowed to work completely from home. Getting time off for sick days or special events is usually no problem. Lots of very smart and talented people at this company and most are easy to work with.

    Cons

Salaries tend to be below industry average, and bonuses are very few and far between. Lots of recent management shakeups, causing mass layoffs and salary reductions. Company has lost it's leadership role as an innovator and seems to be unsure of how to regain industry prominence.

    Advice to Management

Investment in R&D and cutting edge technology are critical for a world-class business. Playing catch-up to the likes of Apple, Oracle and IBM is never going to restore greatness. Management changes, especially at the lower and mid-tier levels, while occasionally necessary, should be kept to a minimum to allow some general sense of stability and familiarity with performance. Having to change direct reports five times in three years is not good for morale or performance. Employee salaries need to be brought into line with industry averages and would be nice if bonus pools were funded at a level to allow more than the top 5% to receive them.

  2. A great company, though struggling a bit with weak economy and competitive situation

    Pros

Great people, broad technology product coverage, broad market coverage, really cares about customers. Great culture with a long tradition of being a good corporate citizen. Lots of technology innovation, as well as strong integration.

    Cons

Too much senior leadership change (CEO level as well as SVP/EVP) as well as questionable acquisitions.
