I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

If you're very good at looking busy, pretending to be exhausted, and being quiet, this place will be a good ride for you. The benefits are ok, the culture has remnants of HP's glory days.

    Cons

It's a feudal society. You won't believe it until you get in here. You'll find managers of dubious intellect, who will sacrifice their entire staff before themselves. MSN reported HP as 8th in the list of its 11 worst companies to work for. I would put it higher on that list. Their motto is "invent" and they used to do that. They're trying to jettison people now, and they're tossing hard working people overboard wholesale. The new motto should be "axe".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of your employees are much, much smarter than you are. Listen to them, engage them in the management of this dying dinosaur, and by all means promote from WITHIN. Or die a slow death; the choice is yours. HP is so large, they can afford to be incompetent for a long time, but not forever.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility!!! Worked from home very often, even worked from Vegas for a week with no questions asked.
Some nice perks - volunteer hours, free photo printing, local discounts with HP badge

    Cons

Upper management has all the influence and your work at a starting level is mostly worthless
Once you are hired, you are forgotten and they then focus their energy (and money) into the next wave of hires
Constant company turmoil (acquisitions, CEO turnover, product failures) is embarrassing

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to make employees feel valued, empowered, and influential.
