Current Employee - Business Development Manager in Fort Collins, CO
Current Employee - Business Development Manager in Fort Collins, CO

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Health insurance, 401K matching, Industry clout with HP (generally, not including recent misteps), Home/work flexibility

Cons

Horrible raises in comparison to market, Poor employee development, Bad management decisions, Employee morale seems to be continually getting worse, Continuous strategic redirection, Internal movement / promotion is possible but with grossly under-market salaries (when internally moving -- external hires brought in at market-value rates)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent.
Realize without your employees championing HP (and their products/services) thanks to their satisfaction with the organization, HP will become nothing.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility in location of work.
Benefits are good, specially flexible vacation schedule and sick days
Colleagues and managers have generally good faith and excellent work ethics

    Cons

Not much in terms of overall career growth. I think its due to HPs stagnant market share..
Lags Strategy and direction on new initiatives and existing offerings
Lower salaries and no raises over past couple of years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider yourself as not a leader. Start small and concentrate on quality of initiatives and offerings.

Former Employee - Strategy Manager in Palo Alto, CA

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people - competence of rank and file is high, great diversity (of thought and ethnogratphics and demographics), tremendous opportunities to do just about any job within the company, culture of trust and respect (still, despite erosion of these values in recent years)

    Cons

Lack of long-term investments or metrics that track/enable longer-term commitments to future business opportunities. Accordingly strategic decision-making is not up to par. Executive leadership actions pressure mid-level management to prioritize short-term results rather than supporting/enabling execution of strategic imperatives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accelerate the course of change that Meg Whitman has started. Empower your employees to reinvigorate the innovation that they are capable of and that is the legacy of this company.
