Pros

Excellent relationship with coworkers. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Managers spend too much time managing up rather than providing guidance to employees

Advice to Management

Executives should come more frequently to visit remote locations and SPEAK DIRECTLY TO EMPLOYEES rather than remaining surrounded by local management while in campus.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    o Many jobs are eligible for work from home o Pay can be good depending on job and location - bonuses are variable (sometimes 0%) o Challenging problems o Opportunities to work with some of the most brilliant people in the industry o Global perspectives o Extreme large scale environment with many challenges

    Cons

    o Work-Life balance - not so much. Typical week is 50+ hours. Sometimes 60-70. o Not enough people who know how to do your job - no cover o Benefits keep getting slashed - why? The excuse is that everyone else is doing it. o Offshoring mentality - many jobs moving overseas o Continuous layoff culture - you never know if you are safe o No carryover of earned time off. Must use all of your leave every year and be sure you save one week because you ALWAYS have to take 3-4 days at Christmas.

    Advice to Management

    o Hire enough people to do the job - just because one person knows how to doesn't mean you have it covered o Be realistic with budgets for the day-to-day items - discretionary budgets for lower level managers

    Pros

    There are lots of commerial and goverment contacts are won by the company. You can transfer to the new contacts if you are interested and motivated. Stay current with industry's certifications.

    Cons

    It is very fast pace. You need to a fast learner and able to adapt quickly. There is always a new challenge around the corner.
