I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great peers, great workstations and debuggers, and get to work on great products.

    Cons

Getting to be demands to support conference calls early and late to support engineers at other sites around the world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HP way had it right. Don't try to scrap it, or improve on it. This "HP way now" is an insult to the original.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - No micro-managers - you have a lot of freedom to get the work done as you see fit
    - Lots of responsibility for those that step up
    - Talented and helpful co-workers
    - Flexible work arrangements
    - Pay for performance - annual bonus for those who do well

    Cons

    - If you don't have the stomach for job insecurity, you might do better someplace else. This situation seems to be improving, however
    - Top performers bear most of the workload which can be daunting at times
    - The senior management ranks is a revolving door although Meg Whitman seems to be bringing more stability now
    - The company is very big which can get in the way sometimes - hard to know everything that is going on

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Take a hard look at the delivery function and be sure that we have enough trained people to deliver
    - Stop thinking of HP as a printer company along - lead with services
