    I worked at Hewlett-Packard as a contractor for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Great technology, especially the Compaq legacy products - laptops and servers - and services. Ability to serve global customers.

    Cons

    Too many DEC people left behind from the Compaq merger. Company is very politically correct in their policies. Taking short cuts on bread and butter printer products and relying too much on ink and toner cartridge sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give DECies the package especially at mid and senior levels. They are steeped in playing politics.

    Too quick to hire externally for senior roles, leads to inconsistency in strategy and message

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Fixing HP's inconsistent results requires a deeper analysis of the sales organization than HP leadership have proven capable of conducting. It's more complicated than executing an annual WFR. The specialist sales organizations in particular are plagued by serial under-performers, whose mediocrity is just sufficient to stay anonymous. Over time, that drag on sales affects results and creates the condition HP is experiencing; the best reps and sales leaders leave, for organizations without the stress of carrying unproductive resources.
