Former Employee - Customer Service Engineer in Dayton, OH

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

overtime pay, company vehicle, I can't think of any other pros except that it was a job

    Cons

poor line managers, their only goal was to get their bonuses. They could care less for the work load and stress that they put their workers under. You had very little work/life balance it was mostly work. the company talks about it but that is what it is just talk

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro-managing your people,if you have to do that then just get rid of them, "C" class employees create a stressful workplace for your "A" class employees, and after years of flustration of dealing with this environment, you are losing a lot of your great workers and you are left with those who are just collecting a paycheck and are home watching TV everyday before the work day is over. If you think that is not happening keep managing the same way you have for years, and you will be in the same place you are now. If you take care of the customer your numbers will fall in line, you have lost your focus on customer, you are so worried about your numbers that you are missing the boat with true customer satisfaction

    Former Employee - Senior Manager

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

An extensive and integrated teleworker program/capability
Market scope provides opportunity for global work activities
Good benefits in the form of insurance coverages and PTO
The name still commands respect in certain markets and segments
Tremendous opportunities for grow in SMB, medical, education, and mobile (cell)

    Cons

Senior leadership has no vision for the workers other than cut cost and work harder
Is a very HW focused and product oriented company; customer is there to purchase
The workplace culture lacks synergy and teams are disconnected from each other
Non-HP workers are treated differently than those with HP legacy backgrounds
A very difficult place to make changes that really matter to customers
Hard to do business with HP is a common cry from customers in all segments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Truly listen to your customers and your workforce vs discounting what they tell you
Choose 5 things to do exceptionally well vs trying to do everything poorly
Bring your customer facing functions onshore in U.S. vs India, Latin America, etc.
Turn your R&D function back on and let it roll vs trying to innovate on a schedule
Preserve the skills and talents that you still have to preserve operational IP
