Too much looking out for #1 makes the whole company #2

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

HP is the original Silicon Valley start-up success story. But HP has grown up to be a second-rate bureaucracy. There was a voice of the workforce survey, but middle managers see the results they punished dissidents. This is why managers have to beg to get people to fill out the survey. The best thing is that remote work is allowed and enabled.

    Cons

The downside of replacing people from the top is that people downstream don't see career advancement. This makes it more necessary for middle managers to be even more focused on the internal politics of getting credit and shifting blame than on delighting customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thin the middle management ranks. Look for bad managers instead of bad workers. Replace top-down performance review Gestapo tactics with 360 reviews. Workers now don't have a way to respond to whatever their direct managers rate them. Enable workers to communicate with each other across the organization rather than having all communication being funneled through the organization chart.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's a job with many challenges
Starting salary was acceptable (bought out from another company, no choice if you wanted a job)
    Worked from home
    Benefits were good (at first)
    company discounts
    Some training
    Stable work

    Cons

Very few salary increases, very small when received - once they reduced our salary
didn't matter if you received the highest ratings year over year.
Worked from home but was expected to work more, management called during off hours
    Benefits were dramatically reduced
    training WBT only
Didn't feel like an HP employee, not a company feeling

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
