I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Depending on the group you work for, there is flexibility in your schedule for personal needs. The company has stabilized in its work force, and there is a renewed company wide effort at recognizing performance and rewarding loyalty, creativity and those who go above and beyond.

Cons

The company is enormous and there are still a lot of little kingdoms and bureaucratic nightmares that pop up. There are far too many processes that take longer to to complete than the work you are asking to get done.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Release the reins a little bit. The trend has been consolidating decisions higher and higher up the chain. The effect is that, for example, a PO to purchase equipment that has been contracted and paid for by a customer regularly takes over 60 days. The order is quick from the factory, but the approval process for the ORC and PO is detrimental to business.

Former leading company that endured failed leadership - may have now bottomed out.

    Pros

Great people - well-educated - want to succeed - incredible legacy of enlightened leadership

    Cons

Poorly lead - especially the Mark Hurd era - destroyed morale and company culture. Floundered to find it's compass - now knows it's true north, but not aligned within to charge in that direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to make some hard strategic direction choices and commit. Communicate purpose and direction and shift decision-making to lowest level to get traction.

    Pros

It used to be a fair company, good morale and they cared about their employees. Compensation was competitive along with benefits, but now all downhill.

    Cons

There are many managers who should NOT be managing. They are "little" people without imagination and depend on their staff for the tiniest of ideas. I was there well over 25 years and all of a sudden, a loyal, large bonus employee was told he was not needed. A kick in the heart for this engineer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please make sure before you promote someone to manage a division, that they can actually do the job! It was H*** going to work everyday, so in the end, they did me a huge favor by letting me go. I am now with a great company and even better people.
