I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

HP is good at work-life balance and pay is good, quite competitive. Just don't expect a raise, ever. The culture favors self-promoters over people who work very hard, so if that's you then you might be able to carve out a career at HP.

Cons

Diminishing opportunities throughout the organization, very low morale, people routinely leave early (by 5 the HP Software building is a tomb), too many "managers" and not nearly enough people to do actual work. HP's management centric style and goofy organization of sales makes it very hard to close deals and then to build solutions for customers after the deal is closed. HP has a very hard time executing in areas that should be easy. The new generation of software products are inferior to the previous generation in many respects, and this creates opportunities for competitors, who are succeeding.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline the sales process and sell off underperforming assets. Scale back on management and enable your individual contributors to get something done.

    Work life balance, work from home.

    Cons

    Poor management and constant changes in management direction. Poor advancement opportunities and retaliation for reporting management problems.

    Pay the field service people more and value contributions. Stop reducing salaries, reinstate pensions, offer stock options to all.
