Satisfying and frustrating

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Have had some good managers that really care about their teams and try hard to support them. The saying is true: "you are only one manager away from a great/lousy job". Fortunately the good ones out number the bad.

Cons

Complexity, ambiguity, rapid change. These are typical in large companies. But there is a lot of it here. That coupled with the constant tension between IT and the business makes success and accomplishment very difficult.

Advice to Management

Relax the policy forcing all employees to only work in an office. Some of us are actually more productive (and happier) working from home. How can you state "mobility" is a strategy we support for customers but not for the employees? Why drive to an office everyday only to sit on conference calls and do email? This policy will result in good people leaving the company out of anger and frustration.

    Pros

The process payroll on time, that is about it. Over the years, this company has sold its soul to a lower cost structure that sacrifices customer satisfaction and product quality.

    Cons

You cannot innovate, you cannot take chances, you cannot do anything to try and make a real difference. You keep your head down, do the bare minimum and avoid making any waves. You get noticed, they start to wonder why they are paying someone in NA to do your job when they can easily send it to India or Mexico and pay someone 1/4 the cost. Quality of the work produced doesn't matter. It is cheaper, that is all that matters.

    Advice to Management

Quit. All of you. Just fold up the tent, turn off the lights and let the once proud company die a somewhat dignified death.

  2. Was a great place to learn over the years, but company has been in cost cutting stage for awhile

    Pros

A lot of expertise to learn from. Work hours in the engineering community are flexible.

    Cons

After hours work is getting to be expected in most groups. Required to do more with less.
