Satisfying and frustrating

Current Employee - Program Manager in Houston, TX
Current Employee - Program Manager in Houston, TX

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Have had some good managers that really care about their teams and try hard to support them. The saying is true: "you are only one manager away from a great/lousy job". Fortunately the good ones out number the bad.

Cons

Complexity, ambiguity, rapid change. These are typical in large companies. But there is a lot of it here. That coupled with the constant tension between IT and the business makes success and accomplishment very difficult.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Relax the policy forcing all employees to only work in an office. Some of us are actually more productive (and happier) working from home. How can you state "mobility" is a strategy we support for customers but not for the employees? Why drive to an office everyday only to sit on conference calls and do email? This policy will result in good people leaving the company out of anger and frustration.

Most people think HP stands for Hewlett-Packard, rather it's an acronym for the work environment -- Hell Pit.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time

    Pros

The only Pro is getting a paycheck. Seriously, working at HP is fine for a short time (can't expect more since they thrive on turnover) so long as you have a high degree of pain tolerance and the ability to endure mind baffling incessant changes that literally screw your chances to succeed or to help the company be successful.

    Cons

Space does not permit enough room to detail the many Cons working at HP.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find some leadership, especially at the CEO level and within the Legal department (particularly the management in Legal responsible for servicing HPES).

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

You will find very nice, professional people, they can full fill your days

    Cons

Bureaucracy, politics can be the highest in the industry; company let go valuable employees, and brings new employees at manager or above positions without impressive execution, they hang in there because look for the top when their performance is not competent as Meg will expect

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company needs to encourage managers, directors and above to walk the talk, and hold truly competent talent (in last year up to 2014 a lot of outside hiring continues but we are not impressed).

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
