I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

Pros

There's great company recognition
The benefits still slightly better than competitors
Large IT partnership gives you opportunities for limited training
There are opportunities for career advancement/career field if you are inclined to do so.

Cons

There's a "race to the middle" regarding employee pay and benefits. They were close to being industry leading.
Lots of "required" training for consultants, but never a budget to get it to them. How is that possible in a 100 billion dollar company?
There seems to be a shift away from customer focus

Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's still a great place to work, but some of the management structure needs to be replaced in order to re-focus on the customer.

There's no budget for required training.

HP makes money and therefore is stable, but like most big business, it doesn't care about it's lower level employees.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Relatively stable environment as the company makes lots of money and is large enough to compensate for weaknesses in a particular division.

    Cons

Benefits, upward mobility, compensation, work load, management competence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with your employees, not just your managers and peers. Actually LISTEN and help implement processes and tools that make their lives easier. Push for compensation and resources (training, new hires, lab equipment, etc.). Hurd may want to cost cut to push the price of the stock and satisfy investors, but at some point you have to put out quality products and services and you can't do that without investing in your people and improving their work environment. Support, through maintenance contracts, provides more revenue than services and is a significant division of any company. When all you worry about is the stock, the product (developers), and the sale of the product (sales and marketing), it will eventually bite you in the ass. See World Com and Bernie.
