Current Employee - Research and Development Section Manager in Palo Alto, CA

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Good health benefits; flexible work hours, family friendly.

Cons

Stingy paid vacation, minuscule annual salary increases which don't keep up with cost of living increases (usually annual raises are 2%). Promotions without a pay raise. "Do more with less" is the mantra, translation: you work more hours but never get a raise. Not enough value placed on quality of product/service/deliverables.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show valued employees that you want them to stay by compensating them properly. Cut back on the outsourcing - nobody performs their best when working 24/7 so they can meet with people around the world. The drawback of this strategy is evident in the poor quality output that results. Accept the fact that it costs money to make money. Stop cutting corners on cost of supplies and resources by choosing the cheapest.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were fantastic. Managers cared about employee feedback and success. Great benefits and incentives from day one. Lots of industry knowledge and certifications available.

    Cons

Unusual salary/commission payment schedule. Lack of productivity automation. Partners and sales reps could never get on the same page, causing customers to be bombarded with calls.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For a technology company, they have a huge lack in internal software and productivity development. Instead of writing software to track our performance, we had to keep up with it ourselves and enter daily into an Excel file. Spent too much time trying to meet organizational criteria and not enough making sales calls. Need to get partners and sales reps under unified CRM tool to reduce organizational chaos.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Right leadership in place to make a difference, cuts hurt but they are needed, work hard and you will get rewarded, do a good job of allowing you to balance work/life.

    Cons

Still not working as a single company, individual BUs working well just not well together.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let a hardware mentality get in the way of providing great services.
