True globalized company. Jobs and morale are eroding quickly, stay away.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

Pros

- Still highly renowned brand and company name make a good line in your CV
- Work-life balance is excellent, easy to get days off, very fair working hours and vacation rules at least in Germany
- Pay was above average in the past
- Still lots of competent, friendly and helpful people around - but severe brain drain may hit HP hard in the near future
- It' easy and informal to get in touch with practically anybody in the company besides top level execs

Cons

Funny how the problems HP employees are facing are the same all over the world:

- Technical jobs are being moved to lower wage countries at high pace. It may be different if you are a sales guy or like to be something like a "process manager"
- Sophisticated job level system in theory but virtually impossible to get a promotion
- No pay raises for years
- Other benefits dwindling rapidly, even anniversary awards and christmas celebrations are gone
- No budget for effective trainings, all web-based and thus worthless
- Bonus policy is unfair and intransparent
- "Voice of the workforce" polls never ever changed anything noticeable
- Lots of embarrassingly bad internal tools with no budget to make them usable (which in the end is counterproductive)
- Internal IT and HR are invisible. Help yourself or get lost.
- Extremely large and confusion organisation, ever changing of course. Lots of bureaucracy.
- Constant job rotation in upper level management
- Control frenzy: everything must be billed, tracked and forecasted, which itself costs a fortune
- "Parasitic" strategy: HP buys company after company which causes lots of irritation and internal friction (not to forget the layoffs) but cut it's own R&D spendings. Innovation, growth, knowledge, people and customers are sucked up from outside companies, rarely acquired on HP's own means.
- HP operates mostly in commodity markets with low margins and high competition. HP lost its once famous ingenuity.
- Lots of company noise in the mailbox, hard to filter out valuable information among all this spam

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- Growth and shareholder value are *results* of a sustainable strategy. They should not be the company stategy itself.
- Respect your employees beyond lip service. As Mark Hurd said at Haas School: "Culture gets created by actions". Yes, but you can easily destroy it by actions. This is what happens at HP.
- Stop the buzzwording about the sacred "portfolio" that has to be "leveraged". HPs portfolio is probably the widest in the IT industry. But that does not mean there is much connection between selling laptops or selling IT services.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Good company to work for. Great career growth opportunities. the Company has a good reputation in the market place which is good when you want to move out.

    Cons

Salaries are not comparable with the industry. at times you almost feel insignificant, which is probably true at most large companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer better compensation if you want to retain your employees. Once the market bounces back, the retention rate will inevitably drop.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Knowledge sharing is good, and the rapport between colleagues is also good, and there are opportunities to work in different areas.

    Cons

Subjected to economic changes and the management seems only interested to protect themselves at the expense of subordinates, thus very political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to offer job stability and also to have interest of the employee in job and career development, and not to get too political.
