I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

Pros

Competent group of fellow employees in the field.

Cons

Expect to be paid between 25-50% below market value. If you've read the Forbles article written about how the CEO has no cares about making the employees feel like they're in a sweat shop.
You get 2 weeks of PTO, which they make you take every Christmas, so really you can't take a vacation. People are being promoted, but no pay increases.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people fairly and you will be amazed at what they can do.

    Pros

HP has always had a well educated and intelligent work force. They generally support for work-life balance. The pay was once among the tech leaders.

    Cons

Pay and benefits are falling fast. They don't think twice about "laying off" long-term employees. You may have to train your replacement in Mexico or India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees were once an asset, now they are treated as a liability. This comes from the top - middle managers are not empowered to make much difference as far as this treatment goes.

HP as a whole is a great company, Global Service Desk tower is not

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

HP is a big company and popular worldwide. There are lots of IT-related jobs available. The benefits and good.

    Cons

    Disappointing facts:
    1. Misleading job title from their online postings. The post says something like Technical Support Analyst and the job role talks about supporting products/services and technical stuff but the actual job is not. It boils down to dispatching tickets/cases from one group to another support group without any technical support being provided at all.
    2. Basic technical training was provided the first month after being hired but it turns out that you will be joining a non-technical team which the trainings you've got will not apply at all. People are underemployed, performing tasks/roles which are not the one they applied for.
    3. False promises from managers. During orientation, it was mentioned many times that this is not a call center. It is way far different from a call center and that you should consider yourselves as offshore IT professionals, but at the end of the day it is indeed a call center environment. From floor layout, metrics, tools/trackers used, phones, procedures and the daily routine, it is indeed a call center type. Very misleading. Very disappointing.
    3. Base salary is way too low compared to same job from different companies.
    4. Poor communication from the immediate managers. No performance review. No career development review. There are managers that are not credible and thus cannot manage the team well.
    5. Poor staffing of teams. Most of the time OTs are incurred because of lack of manpower. Even double shifts are incurred. Schedules/resdays being changed without any notification. No back up plan/contingency plan when it comes to staffing.
    6. Members of the team are not calibrated. Some don't know the proccess, some do know a different process. Very confusing.
    7. Unclear metrics. Confusing. Demoralizing and unreasonable marks/grades. Demoralizing and unreasonable metrics will demotivate employees.
    8. At the moment, people are moving out to seek higher compenstaion and better management, better work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR department should be very careful in posting job openings and they need to make sure they understand what the roles of the said positions. Management should not put deploy people to roles/taks which the person did not applied for and even not mentioned during interviews. Upper management should choose their managers/supervisors/team leads well and must perform frequent check on the performance reviews and career development reviews. HP is a great company, but some towers like Global service desk could make a stain on the company's good reputation.
