I have been working at Hillsborough County (Florida)

Pros

This job provides great benefits including low cost health insurance, pension, and employer paid deferred compensation. Once you have the job it is virtually impossible to lose it. If you only want to work 40 hours per week this is a great place to work because management discourages overtime.

Cons

Many of the employees have worked here forever and have an entitlement attitude. Longevity counts more than results so there is little incentive to go above and beyond. It is difficult working in an environment with employees that don't feel like they are valued.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management across the county needs to get on the same page. Stop the back biting and territorial game playing. The only one losing is the employees. Egos are big in this place and need to be checked at the door.

    Pros

    easy, fun, fulfilling, if you want a job with not a whole lot of responsibility and you like to talk around the water cooler its for you.

    Cons

    new ideas are always brought up in meeting but are never followed through with. everyone is worried about stepping on other people toes above them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    drop the after school program and start adding real recreational programs to the community besides baby sitting. act on your plan for the county

    I worked at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Encouraged to learn and do things independently. Very soon, I was independently completing things like, database management, payroll and benefits, scheduling of events, answering questions to the public, to provide needed information to a team project, filing, customer service and professionalism.

    Cons

    The organization structure changed several times and was a bit confusing at times as it was unclear of the intended intentions. But through those changes, I learned adversity and dealing with sudden changes in the workplace. (not really a con)

    Communication is a very important key!
