I worked at Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Pros

Great mission and real success in making an impact in the Hispanic community.
Reasonable non-profit salaries.
Good infrastructure, support services and work environment - unlike many non-profits. Great location in downtown San Francisco

Cons

High level mission and goals not very achievable - hard to relate day to day activities. Senior management can be very absent, with a lot of direction given only by email and phone.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to support "big goal" strategies with realistic plans to achieve them. Or set less lofty, but achievable visions. Needs to be more opportunity for people to voice honest dissenting opinions.

I worked at Hispanic Scholarship Fund full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great mission and very fulfilling work. Lives are changed through the work that is done at this organization and entire families are affected just by helping one student pay their way through college.

    Cons

The organization has a bit of an elite feel to it. In the Hispanic world, HSF is seen as catering to only those who are already succeeding and don't need as much help. HSF should focus more on developing talent and not just helping those who are going to succeed anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees as they are connected to the need.

I worked at Hispanic Scholarship Fund full-time

    Pros

Great mission. Most of the people working there mean well. Occasionally can overlook the poor leadership because the mission is important.

    Cons

Horrible management. Little to no guidance in the overall strategic direction of the company. Policies and strategies change almost monthly. Employees feel overworked and under appreciated. Extremely high turnover.
