Pros

HDS really does have great people. The team I work on is very close knit and we consider each other personal friends. No hidden agendas or cliques, which is rare. Flexibility to work from home for early calls or focussed project time is great. I feel appreciated and rewarded accordingly.

Cons

There is a lot of work and not enough people. That's pretty consistent across the organization. For those who are willing to make their own careers, this a great place. Don't expect a clear career path to be designed for you.

Advice to Management

Be realistic with what more you can accomplish without increasing staff. At some point doing more with less is counter productive if your workforce wears out.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Flexible work culture (work from home, etc). Technology is interesting.

    Cons

Managers don't trust the people that work for them. If you try to assert yourself, you're labeled a misfit and will be blacklisted (which is worse, IMO, than just straight-out getting fired).

Culture feels like the gulag at times. When people leave, or have significant milestones (5 years service, for example) they are not recognized.

If you're not in the "in" crowd, forget about advancement or raises. There is no career path for technical people, unless you want to be a manager.

    Advice to Management

Get over yourselves. Trust the people that you hire to do their job. Stop micro-analyzing everything. Most managers don't understand software development; the ones that do, don't know how to work with people.

    Pros

Fairness in treatment of employees, modern offrice equipment and systems. Trusted employee relationship. Progressive work atmosphere.

    Cons

Too much favoritism toward certain employees, too much buddy groups, many employees not doing enough while others work vfery hard.

    Advice to Management

Needf to have managers more accountable for their employees and get rid of the dead wood employees to refresh attitudes opf hard workers.
