    Good environment, becoming very top-down

I have been working at Hobsons full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The environment is good, no dress code, relaxed, accepting. No one looking over your shoulder, no one monitoring websites you visit (the company expressly doesn't care, as long as it doesn't affect your work). Many extra-work activities (chili cookoff, game competitions, fantasy sports leagues).

    Cons

I'm not sure that the products they offer will retain their positions at the top of the market for long. The company has become very bureaucratic, many levels that decisions have to go through and a lot of time wasted doing it. Pay across the company is generally lower than other companies. And the ability to advance has significantly decreased over the last few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people who work here love doing it because of the office environment and the people, but you shouldn't assume that's all that your employees need to be happy. Every activity has an effect on productivity, and should be considered carefully. If you feel you have the right people, you can let them make decisions. The environment is why most people work here, but that won't keep your best assets forever.

Very fun people, but the management is heavily lacking

I worked at Hobsons full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing people work the front lines there, with some very friendly folks.

Employees get plenty of time off, and there are many fun activities throughout the year.

Flexible work hours and options to work from home as needed.

Extremely helpful IT and finance department that can assist with virtually any internal issue.

    Cons

The annual awards night should be a pronouncement of the best people/work from the year, but really it's just an opportunity to show favoritism among the senior managers.

Extremely outdated technology (from a development standpoint) with little to no opportunity for extra training.

Vertical movement in the company is non-existent and is reserved for the friends of managers, not the people best suited to fill the position.

Bad managers remain in positions of power despite numerous outcries to HR, which either seemed to not care or had little power to effect change.

Pay is extremely low, even by entry-level standards. A web designer can expect to make less than 40K.

Good managers are a rare treat, not the norm. Most have minimal training, and certainly not enough to effectively lead people.

During annual reviews managers rate their employees with pages of feedback, but employees cannot rate their managers in the same way.

The Hobsons product line-up is heavily outdated, making it hard for employees to be genuine when trying to promote it. And saying anything negative about a product (even if true) earns a reprimand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Honestly, Craig should fire most of his VPs and Directors. The problems at Hobsons are top down, and his vision cannot be realized while obstructionist people hold positions of power.
