Pros

Tons of potential for overtime, which will inflate your salary by 10-40% The job is pretty easy. It's the sort of thing that you'll likely be able to do while listening to audiobooks or NPR all day long.

Cons

Crazy amounts of overtime are typically required The job is pretty boring Management is very stubborn to embrace change The skills you develop aren't terribly relevant to most other jobs outside of legal conflicts departments, so I wouldn't recommend staying for too long, unless you think you'd like to make a career out of it

    Pros

Good pay in comparison to other positions, good benefit package, ability to work with top management, company matched retirement contributions.

    Cons

Management resistant to all change, accounting department works long hours with little positive feedback or rewards, support staff generally unappreciated - but it's a law firm, so that's part for the course.

    Advice to Management

Leadership should appreciate support staff more, managers should be more understanding of the workers, keep compensation and benefits the same for future.

  2. Poor career progression in IT

    Pros

Hogan Lovells is a good place to work if you want to just come in, do your work and then go home again. The people are nice and it does have a good gym and subsidized canteen. Free tea and coffee; good investment in corporate social responsibility.

    Cons

If you want to feel challenged or progress your skills then give this place a big miss! It also offers below market rates compared to other law firms. As with most law firms, the culture is very conservative which means things move VERY slowly, and it can take a long time before any decisions are made, especially around technology. DO NOT WORK here if you want to learn and develop your skills. There are a number of people who have been at the firm for a long time (10 years+) which means there is an overall lethargy and inertia in moving things forward. Meridian House (where most of the operational staff are located) is pretty awful. There isn't a separate kitchen or area for you to get away from your desk at lunchtime which often means people either have to go out for lunch or eat at their desks. The appraisal system is a bit of a joke in that performance is not measured in any quantifiable way. This leads to discrepancies in pay. If you want to continue your career in a law firm then great, otherwise you may end up just supporting applications which are specific to the sector and end up with skills which aren't very transferable. It all depends on what you value most.

    Advice to Management

Invest time, effort and training and career planning other than just the lawyers!!! Bring in fresh people with fresh and new ideas.
