The hotel has their stuff together except for things they can't control.

Pros

Very nice hotel with ownership that actually knows how to run a hotel. This makes life on the employees easier, thus getting more out of the employees. Housekeeping actually cleans the rooms well. I was never scared about checking in a guest to a dirty room (other hotels yes, but NOT here). They had/have central reservations (thank the stars), the last thing a hotel employee wants is to answer 20 questions about reservations with 14 guests staring at you that are ready to check in. Meanwhile the guests are wondering why you are not transferring the call. VERY few hotels get this. Most are too cheap for central reservations and they lose sales because of it. So because they have central reservations the guest experience is much more pleasing and it pays for itself. Now why do other hotels not do this? It's because they do not know how to run a hotel and they are cheap. Have no fear at the Holiday Inn however they have you covered.

Cons

It's a hotel, they all have issues, there is just nothing worth mentioning here. All minor stuff that should not effect your employment.

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, they will always tell you what is wrong. Don't ever stop listening, if you do they stop caring. When that happens it's all downhill from there.

    Pros

The training was great in Front Desk area. Overall, staff is very friendly and fun to be around. Yes, it's WV, but this location is pretty busy due to business travelers and university events.

    Cons

Its a Holiday Inn Express, and has to abide by strict standards to keep the name. But, the location is owned by a regional LLC that owns about 10-12 other hotels (different brands too). Some of their hotels are in small, depressed, and poor towns. So, cost of living is much lower. However, Morgantown, WV did did not get hit by the housing bubble and unemployment has stayed low. Bottom line, the owners are choosing to be cheap. It's really stupid of them, because a lot of great employees have resigned for that reason alone.

    Advice to Management

Look at apartment rental rates where all your hotels are located. You will see very quickly, Morgantown is much higher.

    Pros

Plenty of job security (if you can survive) because of the extremely high turnover rate of the staff. Plenty of overtime during the peak season, but you'll need to work it to make ends meet. If you can handle the personnel issues and "insane" job responsibilities, you can work anywhere else in the country with ease.

    Cons

Ownership will not invest 10 cents in this property or it's few "good" employees. The few responsible employees that remain are "saddled" with an unmanageable amount of responsibility (a.k.a. "they work the horse that works the best"). The remaining employees do as little as possible, and it's tolerated, because at "near minimum" wages, management can't staff this place with anything other than "warm bodies." At one point in time, the number of employees with criminal records greatly out numbered those without one (no joke). Constant tension, arguments, and inappropriate behavior among staff towards each other and guests

No consistency in rules. No employee handbook. One person can sit in the lobby for months on end, doing nothing, and it will be tolerated. Another will be berated for insignificant actions.

No consistency in schedules. Different every week. You could work 10 days straight without a day off, and 3-11, 7-3, and 11-7 in the same week. Don't plan on having a life outside this place, weekly schedule comes out on Friday, 1st day of the work week is Sunday, and it's usually revised 2 or 3 times after that.

No raises EVER. Everyone that starts here is promised a review after 90 days, and additional performance reviews at least once a year after that. Never happens.

Hotel is loaded with "dead weight" employees during daylight, but ONE front desk person between 3 PM and 7 AM the following day (an impossible task during the Summer months)

Lateness, tardiness, constant call offs, and no-call no-shows result in people still having jobs, while the remaining staff suffer for it.

Constant maintenance issues that never get fixed. Hotel is interested in doing what meets the bare minimum requirements to keep the Holiday Inn flag flying out front.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, and I could literally go on forever. This organization is reminiscent of something that goes on in a third world country (not the the good old USA). They have no regard for people and lack a definition for what constitutes "human decency." They refuse to pay for performance, and make me glad that minimum wage isn't $ 2 an hour. Do yourself a favor, and steer clear of this place. Your career and life will benefit greatly if you do.

    Advice to Management

None. It hasn't sunk in after "dozens" of attempts.
