Pros

Travel, exposure to mutliple cultures, multiple ethnicities - in a positive way.

Cons

the cons are in some ways a benefit - hidebound, but you always have safety mechanisms that are redundant to extremes, tends to be very male oriented, but intolerant of harrassments of any type.

Advice to Management

Sometimes consensus can be harmful - if you only get the people who want to please you to answer you.

    Pros

Working for Holland America allowed me to travel all around the world and manage a diverse team. It is a fast-paced environment that requires quick thinking and adaptability. In addition, it was a please to work with colleagues from 6 continents.

    Cons

It can be very difficult to work far from home, away from your support network. In addition, the ships operate semi-autonomously from the corporate office and often the corporate office does not explain many of its choices. Communication from certain departments is severely lacking.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to your shipboard employees

Employees on land and sea don't always understand each other's workplace

    Pros

-Wonderful friendships made within an international community
-Great opportunities for travel to new destinations
-Tradition and legacy of the line
-My particular job gave me great public speaking skills on stage and via broadcast, working with a variety of audio-visual equipment

    Cons

-Too many managers/higher ups/officers for one person to report to and keep straight!
-Really excellent people fall through the cracks and end up just dealing with it, while higher ups with poor leadership skills (such as anger problems) are allowed to continue working with large staffs
-Living in close quarters for long periods of time can create unreasonable situations and moods
-I honestly don't think some people really cared about safety and what it truly meant, while others were worked to the bone and then responsible for carrying out safety procedures and should be honored for their dedication, even during sleep deprivation.
-Demonstrated race and language challenges, often allowed to remain negative, in secret, very passive aggressive towards this issue. But "that's just the way things are..."

    Advice to Management

Please be more understanding and balanced in approach to all employees and keep the standards the same; Improve communication between land and sea; Be more appropriate in the examples you set from ethics to lifestyle on ship; Seattle please understand that you cannot manage an employee from afar when they have both a Captain giving orders and a whole set of other managers to report to at sea!
