I have been working at Holocaust Memorial Museum

Pros

It's a very meaningful place to work and one that is genuinely committed to preserving the memory and history of the Holocaust for the world.

Cons

Very limited potential to move up in the institution. People stay in the same roles for YEARS and never manage to progress regardless of education, commitment, hard work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advancement opportunities, employee training and incentives would add a lot to the institution as a whole.

I have been working at Holocaust Memorial Museum full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - It feels great to be working for such an important institution; that both continues the memory of the millions of people who's lives were affected by the holocaust, but also educating on how to prevent genocide in the future. Teaching how it can happen anywhere, to any advanced and educated group of people.
    - The benefits are pretty amazing.
    - Half of the 400-500 person staff is direct federal employees, half is through donations to the museum, but all get great government benefits.
    - Contrary to what outsiders often speculate, it is a positive place to work despite the heavy content. People seem happy and cheery.
    - Lots of great people. And there are survivors volunteering here to get to know and hear their story. It doesn't get any more special than that.
    - Beautiful location on the National Mall.
    - Great flexibility for a quality work life balance. They value people and respect people here - thus should be expected from the content we deal with.
    - Supportive of professional development

    Cons

Not a lot of dining or post-work options in the immediate area, but at least there is a Museum Cafe that employees get a discount at.

It's an honorable mission, but the work environment isn't ideal.

I worked at Holocaust Memorial Museum full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The good things about working here are the government salary, the federal employee benefits, and the satisfaction of educating the public about one of the darkest chapters in modern history.

    Cons

The bad things about working here are visitors who are incredibly rude, staff who are underappreciated and do not gel as a team, and the general sense of depressing material.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice if those in upper management made an effort to get to know their employees. They treat us like we're invisible, which is disconcerting.
