A bleak direct future but with lucrative opportunities as a contractor putting out fires.

    Pros

The skeleton crew operating this lost cause breath life into this massive wreck. They are a great talent pool of people to work with directed by the mis-fortunate whims of company management.

    Cons

Short-term thinking and a lack of vision. You're in a constant mode of crisis management and putting out fires. Deliberately sets up an environment where a skeleton crew is placed to man and run an aircraft carrier - blind and ineffective. Employees are deliberately overloaded with work projects (like a gun to their heads to ensure employment survival) to induce high yield rates and create artificially generated productivity figures.

    Advice to Management

Focus on substance and long-term goals. Your system is gravely flawed and you will not survive by merely cutting costs or concealing your liabilities. You need to make reliable products using talented people who are fairly compensated and lauded for their accomplishments in your heinous work environment. Abandon Jack Welch's GE philosophy and develop your own or at least emulate the more successful Japanese companies.

    Pros

Depending on your manager, ability to telecommute/work from home
Ability to change between internal departments
Several long-time contracts to charge direct on

    Cons

Performance appraisal process very subjective, hardly any focus on results
Unwilling to invest in software/solutions to increase competitiveness or even reduce costs
Don't expect them to invest anything in the employee or training
Management only knows how to shout at you to get tasks done, but unable to assist you when you need help doing so

    Advice to Management

This is a staff augmentation company, make no mistake about it. They low-bid contracts to the 10-25th% of salary survey to win. They spend no money on any investments in infrastructure or software, as that would increase their overhead rates. They exist to put butts in seats. If you have a contract to charge for a few years that can be a good thing, but don't expect a good salary.
